Cee Green

Think. Act. Dream. Environmental awareness begins young.

I believe a leading cause of pollution is the lack of awareness. So, I founded Cee Green which aims to bring climate awareness, change mindsets, and encourage stakeholders (particularly children) to protect the environment. This is done fun and age-appropriate manner, through books, puzzles, and games that I designed, wrote, and distributed free of charge to several schools in Sri Lanka.

Furthermore, some young people I met on this journey have undertaken to grow fruit and vegetable plants in their gardens, with some even resorting to container gardening when space is limited. They are now conscious of supporting small-scale businesses and organic produce when possible. They also minimize plastic consumption by opting for more sustainable packing materials.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Climate change is a grave issue, and youth are integral to the fight against pollution. This is because they comprise one of the best demographics to find workable, practical solutions to such challenges. However, on a local and national level, there is very little information on such matters presented in a manner that would appeal to a school-going audience, so I stepped in to rectify this.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

I wrote two books, both focussing on conservation and climate awareness as their theme, one for very young children and the other for youth. I also designed and produced three jigsaw puzzles and conceptualized and brought to life a board game, all of which brought about and continue to bring environmental awareness and appreciation of nature in the young and the young at heart. This project also helps underprivileged children and those without access to many resources on conservation.
I also wanted to ensure everyone has access to these learning resources, irrespective of their circumstances. So, to this end, I converted the books to Braille and donated copies of the books I wrote to The Deaf and Blind School of Ratmalana, and to The National Council of Mental Health - Sahanaya, Colombo, too.

How has it been spreading?

The books I wrote and distributed to various schools in Sri Lanka. I electronically distributed these books free of charge via the general knowledge societies of schools. I also donated some books and/or games to underprivileged children, including those who are visually impaired, those who have intellectual disabilities, and those living in rural areas of the country who do not have access to many resources on conservation due to the lack of age-appropriate learning materials. I aim to continue doing so and expanding the reach of this project even further. Over 10,000 students can now access my books free of charge.
I have also held pocket meetings for school children, where I have addressed gatherings ranging from 6 to 75 students, where open discussions were held afterward.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Also, if you want to obtain physical copies I can send those through the post.

Implementation steps

Read the books. Make the jigsaw puzzles. Play the game "Seascapes."
Enjoy the stories and the games. Now think of the themes of the books which are climate awareness and the dangers of plastic pollution. Look at the beauty of nature as depicted in the puzzles, and see its underlying message of "Protect the environment." Play Seascapes and learn about the ocean and the magical creatures that live there. Now make up your mind that it is your responsibility to look after nature and the animals around us.
Take small, everyday actions to deter climate change.
Reduce the use of single-use plastic, and opt for more sustainable options.
Use the trash you find on the street, beach, etc, and try to repurpose those.
Grow your own fruits and vegetables (even in containers if space is limited), using organic methods, if possible.
Walk when you can, and use public transport as much as you can when walking is not possible.
Save water.
Use electricity sparingly, and look for energy-efficient options.
Do not buy what you don't need.
Recycle.
Now using what you learned, spread the message further.
Hold pocket meetings.
Write poetry or a story.
Draw. Sing. Host open-mic events. Perform a drama.
And carry the message of environmental awareness that I spread to others, and make this an even wider, more imapctful network.
