About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The Center for faculty development (CDDE) at FMRP-USP is aligned the institutional vision of excelllence in teaching, and to reach it we support our teachers and preceptors to become better health professions educators;
To help faculty member to maintain and sustain their vitality in the present and in the future;
It is an explicit sign of the belief that the institution has in its workforce.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Despite huge changes on health professions knowledge and practices, teaching & learning practices are still in the 20th century. We designed and implemented a Center for Faculty Development (CDDE) at Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine (FMRP-USP) and delivered hundred workshops and training sessions (since 2016) for teachers and preceptors from our and other institutions. The training focus are on adult learning principles, learning environment, educational planning, curriculum design, teaching and learning, assessment, and program evaluation. In 2018, we received a grant from National Board of medical Examiners-USA to promote faculty development on programmatic and formative student assessment, and we led a consortium of nine Brazilian Universities which reached around 500 faculty members. After Covid-19 pandemic we keep offering sessions focusing on emergency remote learning. All the evidence we have on these actions are based on Kirkpatrick´s level one (reaction) and two (Learning).

How has it been spreading?

CDDE at FMRP-USP started in 2016 prioritizing institutional needs for faculty development (FD) based on surveys answered by the academic community. Since than we offered many workshops and training sessions on educational relevant topics. In 2018 we made some agreements and accepted applicants from other institutions in Southern Brazil, and at the end of the year we received a grant to lead a consortium of nine institutions to promote FD on programmatic student assessment and we offered workshops in many regions of Brazil. In 2020, after Covid-19 pandemic we offered remote learning workshops to our faculty members and to others in our University. We will start another FD on student assessment to other institutions in a new project financed by Latin America Grants from NBME-USA.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

CDDE has its own website (https://cdde.fmrp.usp.br/) and a YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9e5j8mwuSJJB_EsQQgwsgg) where it is possible to have a better idea about what we do and have access to some training material related to health professions education and leadership, workshops offered and the annual reports (in Portuguese).
