Breathe and Feel project: social and emotional learning program for children and teachers.

"Without love or respect it is impossible to educate"

Is it possible for children to be happy and enjoy learning at the same time? The answer is "YES" and my project Breathe and Feel makes it possible thanks to the combination scientifically proven in its effectiveness related to mindfulness, the regulation of emotions and the use of positive emotions into daily routines, from the most experiential way with 100% of positive results through playing.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

As a mother and as an infant teacher, I saw that there was a need at schools where cases of bullying, childhood depression or behavior problems happened and not only affected their school performance but also their social-emotional well-being. The education curriculum focuses only on academic achievement and barely includes play or activities to work on children's social and emotional skills.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Breathing and feeling include three important aspects that are part of the development of emotional intelligence, whose benefits have been scientifically tested by experts such as Martin Seligman or Daniel Goleman in their fields of work respectively. Today more and more schools include mindfulness, emotional education or positive emotions and strengths in their school programming. It has been tested in public schools by more than 2000 teachers and children where they have participated voluntarily and whose results have been 100% participation, observing an improvement in the school environment and the emotional well-being of children and teachers. The methodology has been adapted from the theory of each topic, own creation based in 20 yrs of experience and very practical, where play and experimentation are the basis of the method. A written program has also been developed with objectives, methodology, resources, activities and evaluation, so teachers can include in the curriculum.

How has it been spreading?

The project has been disseminated on social networks but also through official education bodies, so teachers had the possibility of requesting the project through the ministry of education. Also through teachers and parents who know me how I work and finally, participating in congresses and free face-to-face and zoom talks, such as the one I did at schoolrubric talking about the importance of positive psychology in education, a platform for teachers based in Miami. She is part of the Heart Thinking Project for training in emotional intelligence for teachers and students that won the award in 2018 by Lead5050 for Best Teacher of the Year. I have also participated in important digital magazines in Spain talking about the importance of emotional education in school such as Aula Planeta.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

The project is translated into English and has been replicated and adapted in pre-school, primary and secondary schools, so it can be replicated without problem. Simply contact Marisol Gracia by mail or phone (I speak English and Norwegian):
