About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Technology Industries of Finland wants to engage and activate students, and enable them to create and engineer their own machines from recycled materials. At the same time, they will also examine the world through a mathematical framework. The students can gain insights into what they could be when they grow up, and how technology can change the world.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The learning package, developed in co-operation with Finnish teachers, helps children to get excited about the possibilities of technology, so that creativity and constructive co-operation are at the heart of learning.

The multidisciplinary learning package emphasizes the development of technological competence and broad-based skills. This works! provides a framework for the activity that the teacher can modify as desired. The duration of the project is planned to be about seven weeks.

The project was launched in Finland in the autumn of 2020 and about 1,500 teachers have logged on to the website. In the first assessment, teachers gave the project a grade of A for both pedagogy, appearance and teaching content. 2021 This works! will start also in Spanish in Texas, USA.

How has it been spreading?

In the first year of 1,500 users, the materials have been produced in Finnish, Swedish and English. The Spanish translation is nearing completion and other language versions are being negotiated. This works has been donated free of charge to teachers around the world, and we hope that the language versions will be translated in the future in collaboration with educational and business actors in different countries.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Go to www.thisworks.fi and check out the materials that are available free of charge. Until now, the trainings have been produced mainly in Finnish and English, and the trainings have also been recorded. The teacher can choose either individual assignments or larger entities and test the desired assignments with their students.
