Owlbut's World of Learning

Curiosity, Imagination, Creativity

We seek to arouse curiosity, ignite imagination and release creativity. Our School of the Air section is aimed at home educators though it can be used in schools. We concentrate on subjects outside the main ones within the standard school system. We try to reconnect children with the natural world and encourage them to explore outside, something we call our “screen to green” philosophy.

Young people learning without the anxiety of being dubbed a failure because they get a bad test or exam result. Young people for whom school is in itself an anxiety, having a chance to have learning material to help them and to help parents of those children who feel under pressure and even inadequate, I had school anxiety. I couldn't attend for a year. I was lucky in how my school helped.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

I started working in education back in 1982. My first pupils were sixteen year-olds who had left school and couldn't get jobs. They were on the Youth Opportunities Programme (YOP) as it was then called. They kinda told me they were stupid and had failed school. I told them school had failed them and since then I have tried to make leaning fun, infectious and relevant, I.e. learner-led.
