Enseña por Colombia aims to foster holistic quality education and collective leadership to ensure all children and young people in Colombia fulfil their potential. Socio-emotional learning (SEL) is crucial and groundbreaking for achieving this goal.

About the implementation

Enseña por Colombia works to transform education in Colombia and empowers both teachers and students to develop their full potential. Our innovation promotes this by fostering collective leadership in classrooms, developing teachers' and students' SEL skills to become leaders of their lives, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and collaborate for meaningful learning for all

Why did you implement this innovation?

Colombia's decades-long armed conflict and persistent educational inequities underscore the critical role of teachers. They are key to driving transformative change within schools and ensuring all children learn and become changemakers. We focused on SEL as a crucial tool for teachers and students to foster collaboration, positive learning environments, and close educational gaps. Our adjusted teacher training and support incorporate carefully chosen SEL skills to promote collective leadership within schools, empowering them to transform their context, future, and the whole education system

What did you do in practice?

We developed a new SEL approach based on the opinions and perspectives of different stakeholders. This aligns with our collective leadership approach, starting with individual skills and moving towards collective ones. Coaches and teachers participated in the resulting comprehensive SEL training module, gaining the knowledge and skills to effectively implement SEL strategies in their classrooms. A repository of 100 strategies provided practical tools and ongoing support by coaches now include dedicated actions and encourage clearer definitions of classroom practices around SEL.

Learning Journey

1. Build a a shared vision for quality education, emphasizing collective leadership and SEL
A shared vision and purpose is crucial for advancing quality education. By aligning collective leadership and SEL goals with broader school objectives, and involving multiple stakeholders, we can create an approach that includes different perspectives, gains buy-in and builds strong foundation. Developing a shared language and a comprehensive plan will empower educators to create positive and supportive learning environments that promote holistic student development.
2. Prioritize SEL skills aligned with your vision and purpose
Once a shared vision is established, identify and prioritize SEL skills aligned with your vision of quality education and holistic student development. By focusing on specific skills, educators can tailor their instruction and create targeted learning experiences. Collaboratively choose a few key SEL skills and sub-skills to create a comprehensive approach to foster leadership, moving from an individual to a collective dimension of leadership.
3. Design learning activities that progress from individual to collaborative work
Create a repository of learning strategies that gradually transition from individual to collaborative work and help educators to take effective actions within the classroom. This progression helps students develop their SEL skills while fostering a sense of collective and shared responsibility. Start with individual tasks to build foundational knowledge and skills, then move to paired activities to encourage collaboration and peer learning.
4. Integrate and adapt SEL strategies in different subject and topics
Integrate SEL strategies into various subjects to reinforce learning and promote holistic student development. By connecting SEL skills to academic content, educators can create meaningful learning experiences. For example, a history lesson can incorporate empathy and perspective-taking, while a math lesson can focus on problem-solving and perseveranc. Encourage educators to think critically and innovate new ways to integrate SEL into their teaching, tailoring strategies to their specific needs.
5. Foster teamwork and a shared sense of purpose among students, ensuring that every student learns
Foster a collaborative learning environment where students work together to achieve shared goals. Encourage effective communication and empathy to ensure that every student feels valued and supported. By creating opportunities for students to solve problems together and provide peer feedback, educators can foster a strong sense of teamwork and shared purpose. This approach develops essential social and emotional skills to promote teaching and leaning as collective leadership within the classroom.
