The Finnish PopUp School finally began on August 17th at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The school, held at the Finland House, received fifteen students on their first day. The students were mostly Portuguese speaking Brazilians. The teachers spoke in English and Finnish.

The lessons began with a name game and the song Head, Shoulder, Knees and Toes. Everything seemed to have gone according to plan, although when trialing bold experiments, one has to expect the unexpected and so the team had prepared  more activities than they potentially needed.

The students handcrafted school bags for themselves before lunch, after which the students were surprised with some ice cream for dessert before an art class with teacher Hannah.

Meanwhile, Salla Leinonen introduced the Finnish school system, core curriculum and the PopUp School to audience members on the Finland House main stage. Tytti Heikkinen answered any questions regarding special needs education.

What a fun and successful day!
