About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

At Shmoop we know that personalized-learning journeys cannot begin without helping the student and educator understand where they are. Heartbeat blossomed from that concept but with the added power of immediately closing feedback loops for students vs. traditional tops-down models like assessments and screenings.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Instead of static surveys or curriculum built for the center, Heartbeat brings recurring cognitive power to your classroom. By giving students 5-10 minutes, 2-3 times/week in the tool they’ll have access to personalized Insights & Actions about themselves to improve and unblock their learning journeys. Because it’s recurring nature, the information given to students and educators grows and changes with them.

Instead of a tops down model like most tools, which require educators to digest information, set up meetings, and process complex problems, we start with the student. Because we give Insights & Actions directly to students you can make a massive impact on your students' success by just giving them time in the tool. Many teachers utilize Heartbeat during bell ringers, or drain off periods without taking on any additional workload. If you want the extra Insights to adjust for your classroom you’ll also get a dashboard tuned to your students that's digestible in just a few minutes.

How has it been spreading?

Since it's first major deployment in January of 2021, Heartbeat has already been visited 24,000 times, presented 300,000 interactions to students, and captured 100,000 answers. Students have loved Heartbeat so much, they come back to do more on weekends after their allotted time in school.
