One in 10 people rely on fish for their economic and nutritional security. Yet 90% of fish stocks are currently used up. Fisheries scarcity forces youth from small-scale fishing villages to move to the cities in search of alternative livelihoods. The separation of fishers from the sea, both spatially and occupationally, is threatening ocean sustainability and coastal community resilience.
Our multidisciplinary team of marine biologists and media arts educators facilitate photography, stop-motion animation, street art, filmmaking, and other "edutainment" workshops / six-month programs / festivals for students, teachers, and families in small-scale fishing villages to express their ideas, needs, and desires with a global audience through impact storytelling. Through their audiovisual narratives, youth and families engage intergovernmental and organizations, think tanks, and foundations. Their stories are picked up by international and provincial news agencies. National governments are inclined or invited to respond and meet the needs expressed through legislation that safeguards communities and their natural aquatic environments. We work with community members to pitch solutions and find implementation partners. We work relentlessly for those dependent on healthy seas and sustainable fisheries to be represented in global discussions that determine our ocean’s future.
We are based in Lobitos, a small-scale fishing village in Northern Peru along the Tropical Pacific Sea, and have focused our efforts on engaging students in school within fish-dependent villages to the North and South. Our team has also been invited to facilitate workshops with students in schools in Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Kenya, Jamaica, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Trinidad and now, virtually, with students in Myanmar. Our momentum is growing as the ocean's resources are depleting.
We're working on our sustainability plan and would like to organize "Training of Teachers" workshops to help spread this participatory audiovisual movement from coast to coast!
