My name is Prakhar Bhatia!

Currently I work as the School and Community Relations Associate with Teach For India. Prior to this, I worked as a fellow/Educator in a low-income/slum community  for 2 years where I taught 100+ girls.  My interest in innovation in Education brings me here!

Teaching my Students has really helped me build skills, mindsets and values which have helped me evolve as an individual. As I'm writing this I find it hard to express this beautiful experience in words. Here's a quote from Bhagwad Gita that explains it perfectly for me- "The offering of Wisdom is better than any material offering "

I believe an excellent education is the solution to a lot of problems that the world faces today. An "excellent education" for me isn't limited to textbooks. It is an education that inspires the child to believe in herself and nourishes her sense of possibility for the unlimited things that the world has to offer. An excellent education means a community where people are ready to make education their top priority.

Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?

What brings me here is to will to learn from this amazing community of educators from across the globe. I also strongly believe in the "power of collective" and the HundrED community exemplifies that for me.

How can education support students to flourish?

Where a child is born should not determine the destiny of the child. Education helps kids break the cycle of poverty/helplessness and develop a voice to take a stand for themselves. Also no one is too young to make a difference. I have lived this in my experience of being with Teach for India and I believe Studnet leadership and making kids equal partners in the process of teaching and learning has beeen a huge enabler in this.

During my fellowship , I taught more than hundred girls in a low-income community school in Seelampur. Gender based discrimination was one of the major issues in the community. Some of my girls were unsure if they would be able to continue their education post class 10th or get an opportunity to attend college.

We had awareness sessions on gender equality for kids (we also covered topics like menstruation, body positivity, bullying, consent, child rights etc) post which we empowered the girls to become change agents and take ownership of this project. Girls planned and led sessions on gender equality for parents, conducted nukkad nattaks (street plays) at community events and pushed themselves to participate in more events ranging from basketball to Science Olympiads.

I believe it's very important to make our kids aware of their rights and build a strong voice in them so that they can take a stand for themselves. It's also important to consider "child in the ecosystem" and create an enabling ecosystem that fosters learning.

What role does innovation play in education change?

often this excellent education isn't achieved due to educational crisis. The education crisis is a complex puzzle with layers of issues from attendance to teaching quality. Underlying all of these complex layers of failing education systems in the country lies a severe lack of leadership. Hence, Innovation plays a huge role in making an excellent education accessible to more kids because every kid deserves the best education they can get.
