Miguel Angel Herrera Vivar
I'm passionate about teacher-training and education and keen on creating culturally-safe environments for all learners regardless their differences.
My name is Miguel, an Ecuadorian guy who feels passionate about education and cultural inclusion in the classroom. I work as an independent education consultant in education programs and teacher-training initiatives. Some of the organizations I have cooperated with are the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI), ChildFund International, and Enseña Ecuador. I have also collaborated as an international speaker with Teach for All at the International Teachers Forums held with Saudi and Bahraini teachers.
I performed as Head of Training at Enseña Ecuador, working closely with my team of 8 tutors who provide mentoring to our 96 teacher-fellows placed as full-time teachers in three regions of my country.
I have had te opportunity to work in education in different roles: I started as a Science teacher in an underprivileged community in Guayaquil city, in the Coast of Ecuador for two years. Later, I became a teacher-tutor at Enseña Ecuador, mentoring teachers in the Amazon region and co-leading a teacher-training program for native teachers from rural communities of the rainforest.
Besides that, I have been working in a project called "Inclusion of migrants in Ecuadorian schools" sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). In this project, we are trying to generate and measure how different strategies can foster inclusive learning environments for Ecuadorian, migrants and refugee students in three schools of the country; and how we can improve the sense of inclusion to reduce xenophobia and discrimination against migrants.
Because education is not an easy pathway; it is full of discouraging news. And when that happens, it is important that we can recharge energies by knowing inspiring stories from other amazing leaders in the world! And also sharing with them the great stories that remind us of the importance on standing by the mission of working towards an equal world for everyone. How can education support students to flourish?
Education goes beyond the classroom: it can happen also in informal ways, such as the daily interaction between school peers or with community members. And every interaction counts for the development of a student's mindsets and skills. What role does innovation play in education change?
Innovation allows people think of solutions together and make them become true. Innovation allows people to co-create their own solutions by using their individual and collective thinking.
