Special Educator and Disability Advocate
I am Ellisiah Jocson, a special educator based in Metro Manila, Philippines. I am an advocate for the rights of People with Disabilities (PWDs). I have a master's and bachelor's degree in special education, and I am an alumnus of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative or YSEALI.
I am currently working as a Department Head for the Special Education area of CereCare Philippines, a non-government organization working towards the education of children with disabilities. Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?
I have worked in the field of education for more than 8 years now, and from my experience, I can say that there is a lot of areas to improve upon for my country. The tools, resources and training are somewhat lacking. It is at this point that I learned of HundrEd's community of like-minded individuals. Therefore, I joined HundrEd hoping to be part of the change that I wish to see.How can education support students to flourish?
Education is both a catalyst for change and a tool that will allow all individuals to make great changes in their lives. It is undeniable that education is a human right, and it is precisely because of its status as a right that we know how important education is to all. Education also removes us from the shackles of ignorance, from the prejudice and bias that we may harbor. What role does innovation play in education change?
Innovation allows us to move beyond what is known, what is comfortable, what is available. It makes us question the status quo, and urges us to bring change and progress to the systems that we have. In education, these innovations come in various forms. Paraphrasing Biesta et al (2019), we should problematize all things, especially things that are taken for granted.Three HundrED innovations you love. (and Why?)
The Brick by Brick program - because socialization remains a big hurdle for students with autism. The program's goal, and its effect, will have a great impact in the field. Laulau songdrawing method - because education should not be purely instruction, but must be richly incorporated with other needs, in this case, therapy. Tarang Transforming schools - its emphasis of the use of inclusion.Three innovations you would love for HundrED to know about. (and Why?)
CereKit Learn at Home - a home - based learning kit for children in the Philippines. I believe it will allow access to learning beyond the online method. Happy Homes - a residential institution initiative for people with disabilities. I have also worked in this project before and I believe is one of the best innovations in the country. Dance Movement Therapy - celebrates disability.
