Why did you create this innovation?
Two major Spanish institutions Telefónica Foundation and “la Caixa” Foundation decided to join their experiences in the field of education to create ProFuturo under the conviction that digital education was a very powerful tool to improve the quality of education and take equal opportunities to boys and girls in all parts of the world.
How does your innovation work in practice?
ProFuturo combines educational resources for primary school children -accessible through a digital learning platform- with teacher training, educational assistance and technical support, and a monitoring and evaluation system to measure and assess the impact of the programme. If needed, ProFuturo also provides schools with technological equipment to access the educational resources.
The program seeks to transform the educational experience for teachers and students, and to enhance the development of the 21st century skills needed to meet the challenges of today's world.
ProFuturo adapts its work to the different contexts it operates in through 3 intervention models: a Comprehensive Model, that addresses key elements to achieve educational quality; a Refugee Model, adapted to educational needs in emergency contexts; and a Massive Open Digital Education Model that offers open educational content, accessible online, and virtual or in-person teacher training courses.
How has it been spreading?
Africa was the starting point. The programme was firt implemented in Angola with the launch of a pilot project in 2016. From there,it spread across Africa and Latin America, where it leveraged from Telefonica Foundation's experience in social intervention programmes in the region for more than 15 years. In 2017 ProFuturo reached Asia and in 2019 The Caribbean, in partnerships with the Organization of American States (OAS).
ProFuturo implements its digital education programme at schools in collaboration with global and local partners, including NGOs, associations and other institutions connected to education. ProFuturo also collaborates with governments and universities, which play an essential role in the development, growth and sustainability of the programme over time.
