I have been a Teacher and Social Activist in Ghana for over 3 years; my personal life story inspired me to choose that path. When I was 13 years; my mother and I, with my five younger siblings were sent on exile from home after the sudden death of my father. Poverty and hunger rooted in our family. I began working to generate money every day after school, and on weekends. School became boring to me, for I had long lost the interest. I became a public failure when I failed my Basic Certificate Examination and dropped out of school in 2008.
Today, I hold a Bachelor’s degree. In other words, I would not hesitate to spend years to contribute in transforming the world into what we desire it to be. Currently, I am a fellow of Teach for Ghana, a Granny at the School in the Cloud, and a Co-Founder and CEO of Motivation2Learn.
Upon my continued service to our school communities and improving the lives of students, I was nominated and subsequently chosen to be an Everyday Young Hero by Youth Service America (YSA). YSA recognizes Motivation2Learn as an organization improving communities, bringing positive approaches to solve important issues and meeting needs of children. My commitment and impact gave me an opportunity last year to be invited by The Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation and Teach for All to participate in a Youth leadership growth and professional development with Israel as a complex and motivating backdrop. I have also been invited by UNESCO APCEIU to participate in the 5th Youth Leadership Workshop on Global Citizenship Education (GCED) come 3rd to 9th June 2019, Seoul, Republic of Korea to share my experiences, inspire other young leaders and learn.Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?
The fight against educational inequity is not that which can be fought and won successfully by just a single individual, organization, or even country, but with effective coordination and engagement, continued research and innovation with shared responsibility and commitment, we can make a big difference together to give right to all children to have access to quality education 10 to 15 years from now. I am therefore making a long term commitment to effective advocacy and youth empowerment engagements that will give every child the right to life, education and pursuit of happiness.
To me, being part of HundrED Community is a lifetime opportunity to learn and share with people of different cultures from the entire globe. Learning from the world’s great leaders and sharing my dreams and exchanging perspectives with them will broaden my experiences and shape my future way of thinking on national and international issues. One of the major rationales behind my interest in HundrED Community is to attain an in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of leadership in education; and how we can develop and shape best practices to achieve sustainable educational and economic growth.
HundrED Community will also offer me a network of mentoring and support, among alumni and current participants, alongside with hosting an extensive range of events to support me scale up innovations. Additionally, my exposure to a community of current and future leaders from all parts of the world will help me to develop and refine my leadership skills and visions. I look forward to acquire innovative and game changing training and support that can prepares me as a solution driven leader who can collectively foster unity with others to tackle global issues such as inequality, stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination and poverty. I will emerge as a young social entrepreneur working with State Governments, Private Sectors, NGOs, International Unions and other development partners to invest in programmes to tackle access to education for children not in school, as well as to support girls to stay in school.How can education support students to flourish?
The world as dynamic as ours requires education by those who wish to be relevant. As John Dewey once said, and I agree with him that, “Education is not preparation for life; Education is life itself”. Liberalizing our children from ignorance, poverty, and low self-esteem, and giving them a sense of dignity, self-worth and confidence characterized with rapid economic and social prosperity requires that we make quality education accessible by all children, irrespective of their socio-economic background and geographical location.What role does innovation play in education change?
Innovation in education means doing what’s best for all students. Teachers, lessons, and curriculum have to be flexible. We have to get our students to think and ask questions. We need to pique their curiosity, and find ways to keep them interested. Innovation in education means allowing imagination to flourish and not be afraid to try new things. It means bringing new trends and technology in education.
The role of innovation in education is to teach students the how, and explore with them the why, in their various disciplines. Students must be challenged to think critically, to communicate lucidly, and to synthesize broadly in order to solve problems within their discipline of study. Rote recitation of factual information and limited ability to perform technical tasks are educational relics of the past century. Factual information is available to virtually everyone almost instantaneously. The modern practitioner, almost regardless of discipline, must be able to discern the important from the unimportant facts, and must be able to apply those facts in effective and strategic ways, that is the role of innovation in education.
