"wicked" problems excite me. defined as having innumerable causes, be difficult to describe, and without a right answer. challenges like recreating an education system after a genocide. or terrorism. or poverty. conventional processes either fail or sometimes make wicked problems worse and finding the right answer is always about finding and choosing a best options. while working on these kinds of challenges can be discouraging and frustrating, ignoring them is not an option--they will only become bigger.
the HundrED community--educators, innovators, and passionate people--is similarly dedicated to the kind of boldness, bravery, and empathetic insight necessary to tackle the wickedness in our worlds. i am thrilled to be a part of a community that is understanding the history and context to work together to create a more peaceful, more just, and more equitable world for ourselves and our young people.How can education support students to flourish?
there is a global consensus that education plays a crucial role in post-conflict reconciliation efforts, in part because of the powerful role education can play in dividing communities, perpetuating social inequalities, and inciting violence. while critical perspectives challenge the overly optimistic weight that is often placed on education potential, there are many examples to support the argument that education can be used as a transformative and powerful tool for human flourishing.
education can encourage social cohesion and give space for difficult conversations that result in greater empathy and understanding. curriculum in northern ireland after the troubles is a good example of this.
investing in education can increase economic capability and capacity. the belief in this approach is embedded in sustainable development goal 8--"community cohesion and personal security" result from investments in quality education.
education can improve quality of life and is considered a social determinant of health because of its relationship to additional education, work ethic, self-esteem, and resilience. research from participACTION Canada provides valuable examples of this.
education holds extremely powerful potential to impact the lives of young people, and empathetic understanding of context by governments, policy-makers, educators can support authentic educational opportunities for safe spaces that promote social cohesion, empathy-building, local and global mindedness, and positive self-reflection.What role does innovation play in education change?
an innovative approach to problem-solving is crucial to the educational space, whether it is in a classroom, or in an education system in the wake of civil violence--in order to work with, within, and in spite of multi-dimensional challenges. across the world, we are primarily using education systems that were created in response to a very different world. in order to imagine education opportunities and spaces that accurately reflect our present and future worlds, we must think beyond what we know individually to work collaboratively, boldly, and beyond the embedded boundaries. we must imagine a system that helps to break down the legacies of oppression, marginalization, and white supremacy that created so many of our education systems in order to create something that better supports equitable human flourishing. this is not possible without innovative thought, action, and reflection.Three HundrED innovations you love. MeeTwo -- opportunities for young people to connect safely and securely with others to discuss and learn about mental health challenges, wellbeing, and resilience are so valuable, especially in communities where the conversation may not be happening in households or schools.
You Are... -- so encouraging to see an innovation that recognizes how powerful self-esteem, self-reflection, and self-acceptance is for young people, especially on their journey to becoming adults. so many of our societies feed us the idea that self-worth comes from the outside, instead of within. a shift in perspective and practice makes a significant difference in terms of general happiness.Three innovations you would love for HundrED to know about.
