Co-founder Education Soul, bridging the gap in Computational Thinking for low-income K12 kids in Latin America

About me

Hi there!

My name is Juan Manuel Pico! I am a colombian education passionate based out of Bogotá, Colombia. I have extensively travelled and have had work responsibilities over more than 30 countries. An Executive MBA graduate from Boston University, and a Business Administrator undergrad from Los Andes University in Colombia, I am currently working with Education Soul as a Co-founder, a private company that uses world-class EdTech platforms and methodologies to make a social impact, by closing the gap of Computational Thinking in low-income K12 public schools in Latin America.

Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?

I strongly believe in education as a powerful tool to make a change and a social impact in the life of our society. I am completely aligned with HundrED´s Manifesto as the purpose of education is to help every child flourish, no matter what happens in life.

Being part of the HundrED Community is the right place to be and walk through the journey of education to contribute to the discovery of impactful and scalable innovations in education.

How can education support students to flourish?

Education today, more than ever, faces a big challenge to transform itself. Our students are facing a digital era and the current curriculums are not aligned with this new reality. Artificial Intelligence, Predictive Analysis, Visual Analytics and Machine Learning are just a few concepts of this new era. The challenge lives at the intersection of education and technology. Personalized massification in education was almost impossible to bring to live before we had hese technical resources. EdTech, as an industry, can help effectively to support every single student to has its own path, to close its own weaknesseses, to flourish on its own way.

What role does innovation play in education change?

Innovation is at the center of education change. The digital era brings a huge challenge along with a big threat to the future of workforce. Without innovation in education there will not be new solutions to new problems. We simply cannot continue with the way we are educating our kids in the world if we do not understand  that we need to develop new skills for a world that has not even being invented yet. So we need to recognize the digital resources as something familiar for our kids. Programming and coding need to be a new language as any other language we have been dealing with.

Three HundrED innovations you love. (and Why?)

One of the innovation I like the most is Mehackit. In fact, my company is representing it in Latin America. I love the idea of democratize programming and develop the skills for making possible projects with the use of open source code to create art, music and robotics.

Another one I like very much is SHINE for Girls, as the way to lower Math anxiety by the use of dancing. Simply great!

A third one is PI-Top from UK, since it is capable to deliver an engaging computer science and STEAM curriculum to any teacher regardless of their computer literacy.
