Human being Human. ♀. Equity vanguard. Curriculum architect. Sustainability maven. Actioning my purpose by being a force of nature on climate.

JD is a twice certified teacher with extensive science teaching, curriculum development and sustainability education consultative experience. In 2005 she established a small business (Pinnacle Educational Services) as a way to provide learning support beyond the bell to students challenged with the fast pace of instruction experienced in the formal school setting. In 2010 she stepped away from her classroom practice to pursue social entrepreneurship full time. Since then, her professional pursuits have expanded to include equity coaching and whole-school climate action consulting and in 2020 emerged from the 1st wave of the pandemic with renewed purpose and new name, the Phoenix Learning Initiative.

JD has served the profession as an elementary and secondary teacher in both the public and private education systems, an education program manager for a not-for-profit and a public servant with New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. From supporting diverse on-the-ground partnerships, designing future-focused curriculum materials, to facilitating the growth of promising pedagogical practices across networks, she is a leading advocate for quality, culturally responsive, learner-centred education.

Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?

I joined the HundrED Community so that I may have a way to network and collaborate with education stakeholders and partners from around the world for the expressed purpose of catalyzing innovative and effective change in education sector (practices and policies) globally.

How can education support students to flourish?

Education can support students to flourish if those responsible for creating the policies and structures acknowledge and accept that education is not a one-size fits all proposition. Varying local, regional and national contexts will require innovative thinking --inside, beside the box and without a box - to truly honour the SDG #4 goal of quality education for all, and provide systems that are designed to leave no one behind.

What role does innovation play in education change?

The current framework for Western education is antiquated; it is a 200+ year old construct whose time has come. It was created in a time (factory model borne of the Industrial Age) that is very different than the current day contexts of today (Digital and Information Age). Innovation requires that societies do things  differently coming up with an approach, process, product or strategy, however innovation in education is more than just a "different" approach.  Enablers of educational change: student centred and experiential rooted in real world contexts.

Three HundrED innovations you love. (and Why?)

Girl Rising Gender inequality is an important topic. Education is best antidote to eradicate gender inequalities that exist. Research suggests that by reducing inequality societies strengthen economies and build sustainable and resilient communities.

Speed School Striving to uphold, SDG #4 education by supporting the underserved is important and necessary in this time of immese global challenges. In 21st Century, no regardless of circumstances no child should be denied an education. This innovation makes good on this equity principle.
