I am enormously passionate about the most innovative ways to make education more equitable for everyone, because I believe that overcoming future global challenges like climate change will depend on it. I’m an entrepreneur, lecturer, educational researcher, curriculum developer/learning designer, programmer, and musician.
Hello, my name is Chris Petrie from New Zealand and I’m an entrepreneur, lecturer, educational researcher, curriculum developer/learning designer, programmer, and musician.
Like Nelson Mandela, I believe that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. I grow myself each day through my love of learning and my dedication to self-improvement in all areas in my life and this is why I’ve dedicated my professional life to teaching and learning. I founded InSight AI, which aims to use AI machine learning techniques to help deliver personalised learning experiences in education.
I'm currently researching interdisciplinary computational thinking with music and programming through the University of Canterbury. I have over 10 years’ experience leading, lecturing and teaching a very diverse range of students in New Zealand (university, state schools, kura kaupapa, private schools, and Montessori), Germany (international schools) and Nepal (as a volunteer) from as young as 3 to seniors in music and computer science. In September 2017, I was selected by the Royal Society Te Apārangi in collaboration with the German Embassy to speak on ‘Artificial Intelligence in Education’ held at the Australian Academy of Science.
I would be happy to connect with anyone interested in discussing and collaborating in all aspects of teaching and learning. Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?
I'm always looking for strategies to improve student success with the latest disruptive technologies. I am enormously passionate about the most innovative ways to make education more equitable both locally and abroad, because overcoming global challenges like climate change will depend on it. This is why I wanted to become New Zealand's HundrED Ambassador -to connect people, take part in, and act as a catalyst for the world's best educational ideas and initiatives.
How can education support students to flourish?
Education can empower us to achieve beyond what we thought was possible. I have seen many times, the transformational power of highly effective teaching and learning. Sadly, I have also seen much of the opposite, where poor education dims the light of a child's dreams -at times doing more harm than good. I absolutely believe, the hard challenges we face in the future as global citizens can be overcome if we share, learn, and innovate together. It begins with inspiring our young people to believe in themselves, and radically overhauling the old-fashioned industrial era framework of schools prevalent in most systems today.
What role does innovation play in education change?
I believe that educational innovations which inspire and develop creative thinking will be essential for our young people to keep up in a future of rapid innovation.
Three innovations you would love for HundrED to know about. (and Why?)
The Computer Science Field Guide is an online resource for teaching Computer Science to students. This project is open source and available on GitHub.
CS Unplugged is a collection of free teaching material that teaches Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, string, crayons and lots of running around.
