I´m a psych and human behavior nerd, also passionate about the science of psychology and adolescents. I can be described as an intense sensation seeker. I enjoy public speaking and all outdoor activities, my hobbies are hikes, climbing mountains, running and writing quotes, but the thing that I enjoy the most is having deep conversations with my family and friends.
My passion for mental health began 10 years ago when I started working at the National Institute of Psychiatry in Mexico City, there, I had the opportunity to collaborate in a substance abuse treatment research office, when I realized that psychoeducation can impact on human behavior in a positive way, also I met patients with substance abuse problems that were very difficult to treat, that´s why, together with José Fernández, my partner, we decided to focus our efforts on prevention and education instead of waiting for people to get sick.
We worked for 1 year to search for the best practices to prevent substance abuse and violence and we realized that socioemotional skills is one of the best approaches, then we developed Mentes Habiles socioemotional learning methodology considering what works in other countries. Today we have been helping people to be better people in more than 150 schools for 4 years and counting.
Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?
I believe that being in the spotlight of institutions like BID and HundreED can give us the possibility to accelerate the process to distribute prevention to more communities in Latin America. Being in the spotlight assures that more adolescents will have the opportunity to receive quality education by equipping them with socioemotional skills. How can education support students to flourish?
Education is the base to give a meaning to the world, therefore our actions depend on it every day, if we learn to know ourselves and relate to others with assertiveness we can heal the social fabric and develop our full potential. What role does innovation play in education change?
Innovation in education is the only way we can implement new perspectives and behaviors, we need to learn copying skills to manage problems that have been in our society since the begging. Creativity is the value that can bring solutions and improve our communities.Three innovations you would love for HundrED to know about. (and Why?)
