United States

I have been a teacher in district, charter and online schools. I am currently doing research in Instruction Technology and Learning Science at Utah State University.

I have a passion for innovation and educational entrepreneurship. I love leading learning experiences. My experience  in  the US  education  system has shown me the real  challenges and systems that make lasting change and innovation  extremely difficult if not impossible. I  am doing research to provide data to tell this story in ways that can touch the hearts of parents in  ways to demand different systems.

Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?

I am impressed with the people and discussions we are having in the Hundred community. I am committed to moving educational change forward and want to do my part to help.

How can education support students to flourish?

Our current systems require standards and testing to be more important than the learning needs and interests of the child. If we want children to flourish, we need to find ways to adjust those systems to share power with children and their parents so that children maintain their curiosity, exercise autonomy in their learning growth goals and methods and are valued as customers choosing our product

What role does innovation play in education change?

Change to me means opening our minds to learning and trying new ways of doing things and continued learning. Innovation brings forth clarity of what works and what doesn't. It requires the ability to explore, consider impossibilities, fail, and go outside of existing constraints. Education cannot change without these innovative abilities.

Three HundrED innovations you love. (and Why?)

Blueprints because it brings forth an alternative that is richer and more meaningful. It allows students to give energy to things that are important. Mastery transcript gives innovative schools a way to communicate learning to colleges which overcomes arguments for giving up grades. Personalized learning paths provided a needed model and need to look at how learning is organized.

Three innovations you would love for HundrED to know about. (and Why?)

Acton Academies are using a true Socratic method, allowing students autonomy over their learning and community governance. I have created a conceptual model that shows the influences needed for education change and for individuals to act differently. Challenge-based learning is a framework for learning while solving real world challenges.
