Bengaluru, India

Hi, I'm the director for a school project "Bhartiya Leadership School" Bangalore, India, that will open I 2020. Until May 2018 I was the principal at Oerestad Gymnasium, which I founded i 2005..

About me
I have been active in Danish youth education for more than 40 years, and I''m more than ever convinced that education has a crucial role to play in developing citizens that thrive in the modern world and that want to be engaged in building a better world for everybody. Now I'm developing a school in Bangalore with the aim of developing leaders for India of tomorrow, and I'm excited to see what will happenwhenDanish values and school culture meets India. In Denmark I was the principal at Oerestad Gymnasium which became a member of the Ashoka Changemaker Schools network, and for me the Ashoka values are important for a school that wants to be relevant for the children of today's world: Empowerment, Empathy, Everyone a changemaker.
Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?

Education must change to be relevant today. But nobody knows exactly whart education should look like. Therefore it's important to collect, share and evaluate the most advanced international innovcative experiences in education. And that's what HundrED is doing better than anyone, and therefore I'm proud to be a member of the HundrED Academy.

How can education support students to flourish?

First of all, education decides whether you can be a citizen with an income and with an important role to play in a society. People without education are marginalized and poor. Therefore, worldwide we must provide education for everybody (one of the UN's Global Sustainable Goals).

But education can support every student to flourish more than the school traditionally has done. It's not enough for schools to prepare students academically. Schools must support every student's personal development (character, identity, ethics), the ability to form social relations. Personalized social learning is important for a school that really wants to support the students to flourish.

For me, the important key words are: empowerment, empathy, everyone a changemaker. And if that is what should happen in school, schools myst change fundamentally.

What role does innovation play in education change?

Innovation in education has two equally important aspects.

The traditional industrial subject and knowledge-based model with classroom teaching and "one size fit all" are obsolete. Therefore, the education systems and the schools must innovate both in the selection of content and pedagogy.

Innovative competences and creativity are important to prepare students for a society and a workplace where everything is changing rapidly and with huge global challenges. Citizens of today and tomorrow must innovate and take part in creating solutions.

Three HundrED innovations you love. (and Why?)

High Tech High Graduate School, because teachers are the key to innovations in schools.

Lige Leadership Academy, because it's an outstanding example of a school consciously teaching for active citizenship.

Think Global School, because it's global citizenship in practice.

Vega School, because it combines learning environment and peagogy with empowerment annd empathy. A really innovative school.

Three innovations you would love for HundrED to know about. (and Why?)

The Danish municipality Hoeje Taastrup is implementing project called "The school of the future", in which they will change the pedagogy of every school with the emphasis on problem-based learning and contacts to the community and local enterprises.

Rysensteen High School in Copenhagen has implemented a very ambitious program for all students on Global Citizenship, which is integrated in the normal Danish High School curriculum. Every class has an exchange program with a partner school.

The network of schools "Schule im Aubruch" (School in transformation), based in Germany but active in Austria and other countries, is creating a movement that combines UN's Global Sustainability Goals with innovations in pedagogy and school organisation.
