My name is Kati Nevatalo and I'm the Founder of Kasvan. I've got a class room teacher background and also served as a domain expert teacher for the City of Helsinki. My role there was to guide other teachers, and to create and contribute to practices in assessment, portfolio-learning and applying the transversal competences at the city level. Additionally, I have more than ten years of experience from the early childhood education.
I have always been interested in developing the school, especially the assessment culture is close to my heart. I'm now privileged to be able live my dream as entrepreneur, where I can advance this important mission with a global scale.
I see that HundrEd's work is very significant for the world of education. I want to support and contribute to that from my part. I'm able to share my views in the topics that I feel important and I'm able to receive new perspectives back.
By finding ways to enable the student to acquire the competences, which are truly required in the current and future world. Such as the 21st century skills and other life skills, which could be more integrated into the everyday learning.

Adolescent Girls Non-Formal Education in Emergencies (AGNEE). In Finland there's a lot of discussions how to improve the boys' motivation for school. However, on a global scale a more important challenge is to support girls' education, especially in developing countries. AGNEE is a good example of addressing this difficult challenge.
Personalized Learning Paths. I have had a privilege to personally follow Pekka Peura's continuous, fearless and enthusiastic drive to improve and innovate for better learning. Pekka is also never shy of sharing his experiences and ideas.

International culture education in the IPC curriculum. As we look at to current world, which is getting more and more connected and international, we all need better understanding of foreign cultures. I have had a chance to look quite deeply in various curricula in different countries. I've noticed that the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) applied in St. Joseph's Institution International in Singapore, educates the understanding of foreign cultures in a way that should be adopted in all schools globally.
The new Finnish Curriculum (OPS 2016). Traditionally, the education administration of a country is mostly interested what the nations children are being educated. This leads to curricula that omits the "how". How the children learn the best. Also, the typical curricula only contain subject matter topics (exceptions exists though, like the IB curriculum) and omit life skills or 21st century skills. The new Finnish Curriculum is an exception in both topics. The curriculum adopts modern pedagogies that are known to improve learning and thus also supports "how" the education should be made. One core part of the curriculum is also the inclusion of the transversal competences.
City of Helsinki (education administration), understanding that comprehensive education should be a continuum from the early childhood education. The process of learning (and education) is seen as a continuum, regardless that the administration authority is changing. City of Helsinki is finding tools and ways to support this continuum.
Forum Virium, City of Helsinki - rapid prototyping. Rapid co-creation model between schools and innovators. Forum Virium has created and organises a model to enable co-creation of solutions for most relevant challenges the schools are facing in their everyday life. Forum Virium interviews schools and collects challenges. Innovators and entrepreneurs then express their interest to provide/create a solution for the challenge in a program that lasts only a few months.
