I am an educator and social entrepreneur passionate about creating belonging and healthy relationships for students. As an educator of 18 years who currently works in high need, high trauma communities, I know the value of healthy school culture and relationships and I am committed to nurturing them around the world with my work.

Hello! I'm Mike from the U.S.A!

I am an educator and innovator committed to creating equity in education. I've had the good fortune to wear many different hats in my career. I've been a middle and high school math teacher, academic dean, curriculum designer, coach, and tech tool builder. I spent 12 years teaching middle and high school math around the world. The first half of my career found me teaching at international schools in Hong Kong, Italy, and San Francisco. The second half of my career finds me working in high needs schools in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, both as a math teacher and nonprofit founder.

As a social entrepreneur I believe in designing with those I design for to produce work that serves everyone, including the most often marginalized voices and identities. Creating safe, welcoming communities are critical for wellbeing and achievement and especially necessary in historically underserved communities. Feel free to connect with me to discuss educator and student led innovations and socio-emotional learning!

Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?

I deeply value different perspectives and ideas from all over the world. My time teaching in international schools and in the U.S. leads me to cherish diversity and be excited about exploring new ways of thinking and being. The HundrED community surfaces and spreads innovative ideas in ways I love most: by intentionally and thoughtfully including the whole world to nurture new thoughts and connections. The opportunity to exchange ideas and learn with others in such a rich way is why I am excited to be a part of the HundrED community.

How can education support students to flourish?

Education has the potential to bring people together and provide individual and collective opportunity unlike any other aspect of life. Learning is an act of discovery, complete with excitement and anxiety. Thoughtful education experiences help learners of all ages explore and grow to reach their full intellectual and moral potential while also preparing them to participate as part of a healthy community. Education can reduce poverty and violence while increasing cooperation and health. Equitable and effective access to education is indispensable for individual and community wellbeing.

What role does innovation play in education change?

Innovation brings with it the promise to meet the diverse needs of learners and their communities. It can increase equitable access for historically marginalized individuals and peoples and build new, previously impossible communities and relationships around the globe. Innovation is both a means and model for learning, necessary to help communities evolve along side their ever-changing needs.
