Ambassador

Managing director of OPO Hof van Twente, which is an innovative board of in total 11 primary schools in the eastern part of the Netherlands.

About me

I am the managing director of OPO Hof van Twente, a board consisting of 11 primary schools in the Netherlands. I am responsible for the quality of education for approximately 1200 children. I have previously worked as a headteacher and a teacher of all subjects in various schools. I have access to a broad international network and have coordinated successful KA1 en KA2 applications. I hold an MA degree on Educational Leadership.

My aim is to make schools innovative and creative, in order to adapt education to the individual needs of each child. ICT, language learning and internationalization are important area's where innovations take place in my board.

During one of my international activities, I met Mrs. Özgen Bagci-Cervo. She works as an educational advisor and teacher trainer for ETS, Princeton. Together we worked out a plan on how to revolutionize English teaching with a large scale assessment as a base to foster personalized English language learning.

Besides being the managing director of OPO Hof van Twente, I own an eduational consultancy company called "Teachin' EU" (www.teachineu.com). I am also the co-author of two multilingual portfolios called “My Languages” & “Meine Sprachen. I developed these together with mrs. Rosemary Smeets-Cowan, a multilingual expert from Switzerland to offer a fun alternative for the European Language Portfolio.

My fluent languages are Dutch, English, French & German.

Why do you want to be a part of the HundrED Community?

Because I feel that we have got gold in our hands. And it is gold we want to share with a global community. It is not easy to let go of the way you have done things for many years. Therefore the HundrED Community is an excellent platform to find more schools that are interested and maybe want to learn from us and try it out! We are more than happy to share our insights and learn from other people's experiences and feedback.

How can education support students to flourish?

Within this rapid changing times, sometimes education fails to do so. But if we, as educators, manage to adapt education to the needs of the individual student, there is a huge chance that we can let them flourish. For by doing so, we focus on talents instead of competences. There is an absolute must to focus on finding out what a student can do well, because chances are high that is where he can be succesful with in life.

We need to create a rich, challenging learning environments that goes beyond the classroom. There, a student can discover what he or she has a talent for. Then, education needs to provide the support and guidance for each inidividual student to nurture and develop his or her talents.

What role does innovation play in education change?

We need to educate students towards being successful and happy in the future, but sometimes we use methods of the past. Innovation is essential for changing education, but not always acknowledged in this way by teachers or schools. The argument is that the things they are doing right now have proved their value in the recent past. But the focus needs to ben shifted more towards the future. We are not fortune tellers, we cannot predict, but what we can do is to study the needs of each individual student, ask them questions, make them curious, paint a picture  of what they can be and help them to become autonomous learners, who take responsibility to develop themselves with help of their teachers.
