Transforming Evening News into Educational Material
Yle Uutisluokka Triplet is a media service that transforms the daily news into education material overnight. How news stories are used in classroom teaching and learning will be tracked and documented across three classes. These selected classes will be chosen from each school level: elementary, middle and high. In this experiment we are interested in analyzing various practices that teachers use when teaching media literacy to their students. We also want to study the development of critical literacy within students' comprehension.
What is the idea of the experiment?
The goal of this experiment is to make learning about topical news stories an every day classroom routine. This is achieved by creating a collaboration between Finland's new core curriculum and Triplet. The aim is to increase media literacy and critical thinking skills through the use of breaking news stories. By watching Triplet news videos and completing related the pedagogically designed tasks, students learn how to examine and analyze the power of media and its impact. Teachers will also be given the possibility of creating their own tasks so as to enhance the learning of their students.
Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?
Triplet was piloted in partnership with the Finnish National Broadcasting Company, Yle, in the 2015–2016 school year. This partnership will be continued across the 2016–2017 school year.
How will the experiment be scheduled and how will it be put into practice?
In the Fall of 2016, usage of Triplet will be trialed in three classrooms: in one elementary school, one middle school and one high school. The selected classes will receive iPads with which they can use the service. Every class will be monitored for approximately two months.
What are the goals you are looking to achieve with the experiment?
Our objective is to develop the transferable skills of students across media and critical literacy. We also want to strenghthen teachers' own media literacy skills and build on their abilities to teach media literacy. We hope to be able to benefit as many teachers as possible so that they actively use Triplet to teach current affairs.
