The School On A Sailboat
Sail For Good (SFG) is a project that will take place from 2016 to 2022. One family will sail around the world to experiment with learning-to-learn methods and promote individualised education globally. A digital school prototype has been created for the three children who will be living with their parents on the boat. This project will research and develop new ways to learn individually and collaboratively in a homeschool environment. In addition to this, the use of digital tools, like tablets, and the implementation of new content, as well as global learning assessment, will be trialed.
What are the goals of the experiment?
The goal is to create a personalised learning model through this one of a kind education lab. The personalised learning model is intended to be used in places where distance education is a reality. We also want to connect schools from different countries and encourage them to collaborate and share international experiences in education.
Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?
This is a new experiment.
How will the experiment be scheduled and how will it be put into practice?
The preparation has been ongoing for a year and a half now and the actual voyage will begin in June 2016. During the course of the first year we will trial the technology and learning platforms as well as the lesson content. Through our travels we will create content from ten countries to be used in schools in Finland following the experiment. Our partners will collaborate with us to create solutions for the challenges involved in learning from a distance and connect us with schools that could benefit from our journey.
