The Alliance of Tech & Creativity
Mehackit will carry out Creative Technology courses for high schools students in over ten different high schools across Finland. Through these courses students will have the opportunity to explore how technology can help them understand the world around them. Students will construct their own projects through two themes: Robotics & Electronics and Programming & Arts. In addition, the courses will contain online material that students can continue to use even after they've finished the course. The lead teacher may also take advantage of the open material used during the courses to plan future lessons.
What need does this experiment address?
Thousands of young people graduate from high school every year without given the possibility of getting acquainted with technology in the role of a developer. The opportunity of creating something completely new with the help of technology provides young people with new and innovative ideas to welcome the future with. The world around students is ever more filled with technology and Mehackit assists students to realize what technology really consists of.
Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?
The high school courses Mehackit offers are one of a kind. Mehackit represents open maker culture and we have tried many kinds of options. However we have found that a guided, one semester-long high school course where each student gets to progress in their own pace, is the best way to engage students of all skill levels.
How will the experiment be scheduled and how will it be put into practice?
The Mehackit course will be organized in 20 Finnish high schools during the course of the 2016–2017 school year. The goal is to reach the majority of Finnish high schools by the end of 2017. The courses last for one semester which is around 7 weeks. The courses will be guided by higher education students that have a personal relationship with technology and that have received special training to use the mehackit materials.
