Startup High School
There are several programspecific high schools in Finland, such as the Sibelius High School for musicians, the Kallio Upper Secondary for Performing Arts and a variety of high schools for athletes. HundrED will partner with Slush and The Otava Academy to create an ambitious startup high school program using an online platform that students can attend as part of their studies, meaning that every Finnish high school can become a ‘startup high school’. The program will also include extensive practical studies. Over the course of the experiment, the project will find the best ways of implementation and practice, as well as developing a clear execution plan.
What is the idea of the experiment?
The goal of the Startup High School is to assist Finnish schools in achieving the 2016 national curriculum’s learning goals for skills, which current operational systems are unable to adequately support. This method offers time, support and opportunity through practical work. In addition, it presents opportunities to learn skills and build networks in fields that each individual student is passionate about.
From the viewpoint of the student, what does this mean in practice?
Startup High School students will create networks across companies and communities, creating authentic opportunities for students to develop their own communities through practice as well as developing competency in problem solving. All participating students will be supported, advised and inspired to create their own startup business. We believe high schools should be places for students to be in touch with their own innovativeness and have the opportunity to create, develop, market and sell their own products.
