Partnering Universities with High Schools Through Virtual Reality

The experiment will develop new and interesting ways to bring high schools and universities together. The model will be developed in collaboration with the Physics Department at the University of Eastern Finland. A 360 virtual reality lab will be trialed as part of the lesson plan for high school physics and chemistry. The experiment could then be adapted to biology, geography and history lessons. In the long run, the focus will be on creating opportunities for high school students to attend university courses as part of their studies, and prepare them for the future needs of higher education and the workforce.

What are the goals you are looking to achieve with the experiment?

The goal is to bring high schools and universities closer together by adding modern technology to the traditional collaboration.

How will the experiment be scheduled and how will it be put into practice?

The experiment will be conducted beginning in the Fall of 2016. The first step is to collaborate more in physics and chemistry with the University of Eastern Finland. For example the required partnerships to enable to virtual reality lab have been sought out in the Spring of 2016. In the Fall we will produce 360 video material in partnership with #FinEduVR and the faculty of the university and Klassika High School in Kuopio, Finland. In the Spring of 2017 the conceived models will be tested and feedback will be gathered from the students involved, so that the validated models can be shared and applied to other subjects as well.

Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?

Yes, this is a new experiment. The high schools in Kuopio have been collaborating with the University of Eastern Finland since the mid-nineties by arranging alternative courses for high school students by the university. During the 2016-2017 school year we’ll be researching new ways to better the collaboration by the means of technology.
