Mutku Makerspace – the lab for creative learning

The Mutku Makerspace in Arabia, Helsinki is piloting a new broad-band space for design. The information acquired from the process will be applied in schools later. The space being used will be inside the school and altered to become a lab for creativity in which students will learn the different stages involved in the process of design.

What are the goals you are looking to achieve with this experiment?

Arabia Elementary School will be facilitating a creative space in which the school can trial design thinking skills. Students will be creating by hand, designing, modelling, trialling, brainstorming and getting inspired. The goal is to make designing as approachable as possible, to encourage students to learn from the mistakes they make, and to help each student to reach their full potential.

What are the concrete steps of the experiment?

The Makerspace will be furnished and equipped to suit the needs of the teachers and students. SuoMu has held design workshops at the school prior to this experiment in which the students have been visualizing what the space should look like.

How will the experiment proceed in the spring of 2017?

The spring will include the following: planning the workshop and space, establishing partnerships, furnishing, purchasing materials, establishing rules for the space and booking facilitators for the space who will be responsible for the upkeep.

How will this experiment change the way we educate?

The Arabia Mutku Makerspace will pilot a new kind of broad-band competency in design thinking in a space at the Arabia Elementary School. The space will be involving everyone in creative thinking from students and teachers, to parents and agents outside of the school as well.
