Learning Material Made By Teachers

Finland is full of excellent teachers that create digital learning material in their own schools for their students to use. This material rarely spreads outside of these schools and so in this HundrED experiment digital learning material will be trialed and offered to teachers in Finland for free. The goal is to create an operative model that benefits everyone. The experiment was initiated by the history and social science teachers of Etelä-Tapiola Upper Secondary, Olari Upper Secondary and SYK Comprehensive School.

What is the idea of the experiment?

Sharing of know-how and ideas is in its infancy in the Finnish school system. Teachers are hired based on their ability to teach classes and for good reason teachers keep their excellent practices that they’ve worked hard on to themselves. Large municipalities haven’t gone forth in promoting a collaborative working culture.

HundrED is conducting an experiment in which digital learning material will be created, trialled and shared with schools across Finland. The material will be online to be applied to personal school curriculum goals. Sharing excellent practices will happen through the development of the material - teachers are given the opportunity to showcase their visions and seek new great ideas to apply to their work furthermore.

Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?

An experiment such as this hasn’t been conducted prior.

How will the experiment be scheduled and how will it be put into practice?

The experiment will begin by designing a school course and another two courses will be created later in the school year. Those designing the initial course will be doing the teaching as well so instant feedback can be used in the development of the second and third course.

What are the goals you are looking to achieve with the experiment?

The goal of the experiment is to pedagogically produce digital content and material created by the students. The main emphasis will be on the development of skills - a significant element in the new national core curriculum. The methods that will be developed will be replicable and lower learning material costs in the long run.
