From Numbers To Skills
The city of Jyväskylä, Finland will redesign its assessment methods. Student performance will be evaluated using goals that they themselves have set at the beginning of their studies. A criteria-based tool will be created to assess student performance and skill level as well as follow the learning process to highlight areas of development. The impact of the tool will be researched in schools throughout the development process.
What is the idea of the experiment?
The basic education of Jyväskylä will be trialling a new assessment model in which grading will be replaced with the assessment of skills. The qualitive and quantative criteria is based on Krathwohl & Anderson (2001) taxonomy and is aligned with the new national core curriculum. The assessment model will be able to assess how the skills of each student are developing.
Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?
Jyväskylä has been assessing this way to an extent for years, but as an experiment this is new and the timing is right with the changes being implemented in the basic education of schools in Jyväskylä.
How will the experiment be scheduled?
We will be following the progression of the experiment throughout the 2016-2017 school year.
All comprehensive schools in the city of Jyväskylä, Finland.
