Energy and Sustainable Development as a Part of a Local Curriculum
Vaasa is the Northern energy capital. The city has created a strategy that promotes sustainability education for all students from kindergarten through high school, and is designed to be suitable for each age group and ability. The goal of the strategy is to increase students' knowledge of energy and sustainable development and to make these an essential part of learning. In this experiment two schools will be participating in different ways: one, a middle school, will use solar panels, while the other, a high school, will focus on developing and carrying out the energy education strategy.
What is the idea of the experiment?
In this experiment we will research how the sustainable energy education strategy can be put into daily practice in schools. We will also examine the sustainable development solutions that the participating schools will make. The goal is to increase students' knowledge of sustainable energy, especially with regards to renewable energy sources.
Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?
The city's current energy education strategy will be developed, applied and its implementations will be examined in one middle school and one high school.
How will the experiment be scheduled and how will it be put into practice?
The experiment will be carried out across the 2016–2017 school year.
