culturED - workshops on broad-mindedness for teachers
Finnish athletes from diverse backgrounds will partner with Walter Ry to organise workshops for teachers in which topics such as Finnish nationality, multiculturalism, identity, discrimination and racism will be examined. The workshops will consist of an introduction to the topic and terminology, discussions in small groups and a summary. Teachers will be encouraged to boldly speak their minds and share their ideas.
What are the goals you are looking to achieve with the experiment?
The idea of the experiment is to develop the multicultural competence of teachers with workshops and learning material. In the workshops teachers will discuss matters open-mindedly from new points of view and question known stereotypes as well as consider their own identity. The experiment will eventually go even further in preventing the exclusion of children and young people through empowerment and lessons in equality.
Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?
The workshop for teachers is being organized for the first time and is based on a workshop that has been originally developed for young people. The original workshop is part of the KYTKE-project that began in 2010. Nationally the project came about in 2012 and in recent years has been an integral part of Walter ry. The Ministry of Education and Culture funded the KYTKE-project through 2010 to 2016. For the next years to come the project will be funded by RAY - Finland’s Slot Machine Association.
Part of the KYTKE-project was to develop a learning material package for schools as well as the short film ‘Konflikti - Conflict’ that will both be used as part of the workshop for teachers experiment.
How will the experiment be scheduled?
The workshop for teachers will be planned and developed throughout the Fall of 2016 and conducted in the Spring of 2017. The workshops will be organized in four cities. The cities will be announced later.
