Building Personalized Learning Paths

Facilitating learning and creating personalized learning paths are important development areas in the future of education. This HundrED experiment will test how these learning models work in practice from the teacher’s point of view, from setting goals to student self-assessment. The experiment will focus on personalized learning in high schools as well as comprehensive schools and attempt to recognize what works and what doesn’t.

What is personalized learning?

Personalized learning means practices in which the strengths, tendencies and temperament of each individual is taken into account. Learning, however, happens in a collaborative, social environment. Personalized learning can be executed in various ways. The common goal is for each individual to develop skills in learning to learn, self-regulation, assessment, interaction, collaborating and social skills. Creating a safe learning environment collaboratively in which students may be able to build up their self-confidence and knowledge of themselves and their abilities is a significant part of the processes.

What are the goals you are looking to achieve with the experiment?

The goal of the experiment is to create three learning path models or practices that assist in achieving the personalized learning goals. The development of the models will proceed as case studies throughout the 2016-2017 school year at the Martinlaakso High School. The process will be documented and shared with teachers to implement into their own work. The aim is to share ready practices and tools with teachers as well as ones that are in the process of being trialled.

Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?

Personalized learning has been key in the school’s development work prior to this experiment for the equivalent of seven years now and the work has received a lot of media attention in Finland. As a result of this, in partnership with YLE the Koulukorjaamo-documentary series was filmed in the spring of 2016. In addition a doctorate on the practice of personalized learning is expected to be finished in 2017.

How will the experiment be scheduled and how will it be put into practice?

This experiment will create three case studies in three different stages.

  1. August/October 2016: in the first case study a cross-curricular course in Maths and Finnish language will be developed for first year high school students. Students will study in five person teams.

  2. October 2016 to spring 2017: the second case study is a long study period in physics for second year high school students.

  3. The third case study will be planned and conducted in the spring of 2017. The angle of the experiment as well as the approach will be announced later after experience has been gained from the trials of the first two case studies.

Describe why you feel it is meaningful to be a part of HundrED

The development work has gained lots of national attention and many teachers have used the model in developing themselves professionally. HundrED can assist in sharing this knowledge more effectively.
