Building a New Operational Culture

Ritaharju Comprehensive School is building a new kind of operational culture for their school - hierarchy's have been dismantled, responsibilities are clearly stated and leadership is very student-centered. Participation has been bolstered as this new structure of leadership culture is open for creativity and experimenting. In this experiment we will tag along to see how to build and keep up a culture of team leadership in schools.

What are the goals you are looking to achieve with the experiment?

The goal of the experiment is to develop the operational culture further, to train teachers to become facilitators and students to take ownership of their own learning. An equity plan will be brought as a tool to strengthen the team leadership culture. The aim is to bring the team leadership culture to student learning.

Is this a new experiment or is this based on an existing one?

The new operational culture has been under development since 2009 alongside the construction of the new school and community center. The building enables a new kind of culture in leadership - something that was considered throughout the construction process. The Ritaharju Comprehensive School is continuously growing. Currently the school facilitates for 1200 students and in three years time there will be 1400 students altogether. The school consists of four buildings with a possibility to build a fifth building. These changes have to be taken into account in strengthening the school’s leadership.

How will the experiment be scheduled?

The experiment will be trialled throughout the 2016-2017 school year.
