Letters from Beyond-Sea

Students feel very motivated when writing letters to students from other countries who use the same language but with variations.

The objective of this work was to discuss the differences between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese. The project, called "Letters from Beyond-Sea", was carried out with students of 7th grade and 11th grade. They exchanged letters with students from Lisbon and Angola. The students were able to verify the linguistic and cultural differences of each place.

Implementation steps

The project

This project seeks to discuss and analyze the use of languages that, although they are the same, have variations, such as Brazilian and European Portuguese, North American and British English, Austrian German and Swiss German, among others.

The internet can help find partner teachers. Send an email telling about the project and make an invitation. After that, teachers can continue to chat via email or video and combine the steps and timeline. Letters can deal with linguistic and cultural issues. It is necessary to do a previous work with the students. This work involves discussions about the different uses of the language, the proper preparation of a letter and information about the country to which the letters will be sent. They can be sent by mail and by email. Students are quite excited when the answers to the letters they send arrive. From there, students can do a work of analysis and comparison of the uses of the language.
