Iina, teacher
In my experience the way of approaching science with stories and playfulness has had a strong impact on children. Combining a storytelling and science has been very motivating and interesting.

about the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Early STEAM education is highly important from the viewpoints of the conditions that our planet is facing and the development of children's cognitive skills. Many curriculums emphasize STEAM education but teachers feel that they don't know how to introduce STEAM to young children. Especially, they struggle to connect the vital aspect of young children's learning, namely play, to STEAM practices.

How does your innovation work in practice?

Kide Science has developed a research-based solution to help teachers implement high-quality play-based STEAM education for young children. The pedagogy is grounded on rigorous scientific research by our founder Ph.D. Jenni Vartiainen, and follows the acknowledged Finnish philosophy on early education. When children do science with the Kide curriculum, they feel like they're playing and enjoying themselves, while in fact, they are building highly important skills needed in the scientific process and thinking. An online platform provides teachers with innovative play-based STEAM lesson plans that engage children hands-on, minds-on, and hearts-on. Through play, children will be able to relate scientific concepts and practices to their cultural worlds and therefore, make science relevant for themselves. In addition to lesson plans, teachers are provided with background knowledge of young children's play-based STEAM education and guidelines to implement formative assessment strategies.

How has it been spreading?

Kide Science has an online platform for educators in English, Chinese and Finnish. Kide Science is part of early childhood education in 22 different countries and there are 1500 teachers who use Kide Science pedagogy and lesson plans.

In Finland, Kide Science founders have co-created also a science TV show series "Tiedonjyvä" (Reach 300 000 families) with Finland’s national public service broadcaster. Kide Science has also published the children´s book series "Tiedeseikkailu" (20 000 books) with Sanoma Pro.
