There is an increasing disconnect between education and needs of labour market and our society in general. This leads to skills mismatch and high level of youth unemployment (OECD youth unemployment for students 15-24 years old is 14% as of February 2021). By developing 21st century competencies, Beyond Education (BE) aims to bridge this gap and increase job and life readiness of students 13-21.
The coronavirus pandemic has amplified the changes and challenges that the whole education sector is facing; one of it being increasing need for developing the “whole child” and fostering students’ SES. At the same time, the pandemic accelerated the drastic shift towards full-time online learning. BE used this opportunity to launch its product - development of 21st century competencies fully online, anytime and anywhere, with the target to be available to anybody. We have our proprietary curriculum aimed to develop comprehensive set of competencies through design thinking methodology to empower students to be self-directed learners. We have a partnership with the Dream Shaper, project based learning tool used to deliver our programs.
The company was founded in March 2021, since then we designed 4 new courses (Global Citizenship, Entrepreneurship, Self-awareness, Self-management). Between May-June we piloted our first program on Global Citizenship with students from Slovakia, France, Portugal, South Africa and Colombia. 96 signed up, 63 started the program and 35 completed (the average completion rate in MOOCS/online programs is ~ 15%). Out of students that completed our programs, 96% of students completing our programs would recommend it to their good friend. For next 6 months, we plan to pilot 5 other programs among ~600 students, main objective is to gather and to analyse both qualitative and quantitative data and improve our future programs development based on that.
