HundrED Ambassador-in-Focus: Marcus Sheehan
Tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in Australia and Japan. I moved to Finland and now reside in Helsinki. I'm currently a teacher at an elementary level.
Why did you want to become a HundrED Ambassador?
The views that HundrED hold are exactly why I became a teacher. Though I love teaching, I want work more towards the ideals that I believe in. I feel that being a HundrED ambassador will allow me to do this.
Why should we change our schools?
I have seen schools come a long way from the beginning of my teaching career. However, we should always expect more. Society seems to be more polarised that ever before and it's only through education that we can solve these issues.
Why is innovation in education crucial today?
There are so many issues that children have to tackle everyday such as bullying due to gender or race and problems with mental wellbeing such as depression and stress. It is only through understanding and innovation that we can challenge problematic views and start to change them.
Three HundrED innovations you love.
Democratic Kindergartens as it enables students to learn how to cope with responsibility from a young age.
Self Organized Learning Environments as I'm a huge fan of inquiry-based learning.
Roots of Empathy as I believe that the values promoted by this workshop are clearly needed in today's society.
