CIVIX seeks to fortify civic education and bolster resilience against threats to democracy among Colombian youth. Through Voto Estudiantil, our goal is to cultivate a culture of robust democratic engagement and empower young students to actively participate in democratic processes. Additionally, we aim to elevate the standard of the integration of civic education in curriculum across schools.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Our innovation was born out of the need to cultivate an informed and engaged citizenry from a young age. In Colombia the future of democracy hinges on the active participation of its citizens. Recognizing this, we crafted a solution that transforms classrooms into vibrant hubs of democratic learning, where students not only learn about the electoral process but also experience it firsthand

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Voto Estudiantil epitomizes experiential learning in civic education, leveraging real-world political events like elections bringing democracy to life in the classrooms. By transforming these events into dynamic teaching opportunities, educators are empowered to cultivate active citizenship among students, fostering a ripple effect that extends to families and communities.
Our program doesn't just stop at one-time engagement. It seeks to establish a sustainable model of educator and student involvement in the electoral process, ensuring a lasting impact that transcends individual elections.
Our beneficiaries are students, aged 12-18, from both public and private schools. In 2023, over 1,500 educators underwent training with CIVIX Colombia, resulting in the participation of 247,077 students from 810 schools in the largest election simulations ever conducted in Latin America. This scale underscores the potential of Voto Estudiantil in shaping the democratic landscape of tomorrow.

How has it been spreading?

Since its inception in 2018, CIVIX Colombia has spearheaded four editions of the program (2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023), each marked by exponential growth and impact.
Beginning in two provinces in 2018, the initiative quickly gained momentum, culminating in its latest edition (2023), which saw a staggering 247,077 students from 15 of the country's 32 provinces actively participating.
Over the course of these four editions, more than 4,000 educators have been equipped and empowered by CIVIX Colombia, receiving comprehensive training and materials to integrate civic education into their classrooms.
The success of Student Vote in Colombia sparked interest beyond borders. In 2022, Chile embraced the program during its constitutional election, with 79,526 students from 438 schools.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

To try Voto Estudiantil, interested teachers simply need to register for the program. Following registration, they gain access to our immersive Democracy Bootcamps. At this event, educators receive comprehensive training and essential materials curated by CIVIX Colombia. Afterwards, teachers receive an electoral kit to have the electoral simulation during the real-world elections.

Implementation steps

Register Your School
CIVIX Colombia, in partnership with local education stakeholders, invites teachers to register their school as a participant in the project. By doing so, educators become part of the CIVIX Network of Civic Teachers in Colombia.
Attend Democracy Bootcamps
Registered teachers participate in these sessions for training and exchange of experiences. Pedagogical tools for implementing Student Vote are provided, with schools having the autonomy to adapt materials to their specific needs. During the Bootcamps, educators receive everything they need to integrate civic education topics and methodologies within their classrooms using real-world political events as the central core of the learning practices.
Engage with the Campaign and implement the program
Utilizing experiential learning tools and strategies, students delve into government and the election process, investigate parties and candidates, and engage in discussions with peers and families.Teachers can provide extensions of the methodology, including role-playing candidate representation, media teams covering the day at school, or even sensory democracy promotion experiences such as museums or exhibitions.
Student Vote week!
The teachers who lead the implementation of the program receive the electoral kits curated by CIVIX Colombia in their schools. There they find the electoral cards, ballot boxes, cubicles, posters, and electoral guides. Students cast their votes for official election candidates in the presidential or municipal elections held within their schools. The results are kept secret by CIVIX and are only publicly shared, including with the media, after the close of the official polls.
