Nova Escola's Lesson Plans

Lesson Plans from teachers to teachers. A simple, but novel way to transform public education.

In 2017, the new National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC) was approved, bringing a new way to organize and follow students' learning. We worked to offer the teachers a faster, free, and high quality solution to understand how to apply it in the classroom, by creating over 6,000 lesson plans, developed with the teachers. In 3 years, the plans were being accessed by almost 1MM teachers monthly.

Through the LP, we hope to promote an education that places students at the center of learning, with an innovative approach that ensures equity and quality for all students. It also represents an important tool to support teachers' work, improving their teaching skills, assisting in the personalization of classes according to each classroom's reality, and enhancing their working conditions.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created the initiative to help teachers understand and implement the BNCC. Our step-by-step lesson plans assist teachers in preparing classes so the students can develop the skills established by BNCC. The initiative also aimed to translate the new policy into the reality of public schools in Brazil, ensured by our collaboration with over 600 public school teachers from across the country.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Firstly, when we realized that teachers would need help to implement the BNCC, we looked for benchmarks and saw LearnZillion (US-based organization) as a source of inspiration. We designed our Lesson Plans (LP) with their collaboration. We understood the LP would bridge the gap between the skills foreseen in the National Curriculum and the classroom planning by the teacher. Some of our premises were: place the student at the center of learning; alignment with the reality of public schools - we trained over 600 teachers to be the authors. We worked on both the unfolding of the curriculum skills into a scope and sequence of lessons and also on the creation of content for each lesson (exercises, guides, links, and texts to broaden perspectives). The LP has an 88+ NPS rate among teachers. This initiative was the first national-scale effort to produce online and free classroom materials. Currently, we are studying ways to use the LP in an AI-powered interface created to assist teachers.

How has it been spreading?

Since we launched the lesson plans for teachers in February 2018, we have been tracking how many teachers and how many views each of the lesson plans and the overall solution receive. Occasionally, we conducted NPS assessments of the lesson plans and talked with teachers to understand their usage. In 2022 we started to continuously monitor the plans in 4 quality attributes and in 2023 we started to measure monthly the NPS. In 2023 we had almost 1MM users monthly using Nova Escola’s Lesson Plans, an NPS rate of 88+, and our 4 quality attributes assessments over 9 out of 10. Our goal for the next few years is to continue producing lesson plans and evolving the existing ones. Additionally, we aim to introduce AI logic into the platform. This idea is being tested and showing promising results.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Access Nova Escola’s platform by this link: https://novaescola.org.br/planos-de-aula. The content is fully in Portuguese. You should select the school grade (ex.: 2º ano) and the curricular component (ex.: Historia), and then the page will show the most used lesson plans and a bottom to get all of them.
