The change that we want to bring about is a much greater emphasis on leadership development, developing essential 21st Century skills along with student centered learning rather than teacher centered learning. In addition, getting educators to step away and give students more autonomy for their learning, their successes and overcoming their challenges.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

It is clear that students lack critical leadership and life skills to be able to thrive in a rapidly changing world. iLead21 embodies the skill-sets noted for the future by the World Economic Forum, McKinsey, OECD and other internationally recognized organizations. Children learn content is school that they can just Google iLead21 develops skills that are life changing and set them up for success

What does your innovation look like in practice?

iLead21 is embedded into the day-to-day curriculum of the school. It is infused in all elements of the school experience as the foundation of the learning/school journey. It is not taught as a stand alone course but rather an experience that is embedded in all aspects of school life and causes students to make the connection of their learning to relevant real-world application through a highly collaborative model. Students are placed in authentic leadership roles and develop life skills by applying the iLead21 cycle to their learning journey. Students create a company and learn and implement the five iLead21 driving principles along with the iLead21 process. Students learn to operate as high functioning teams to have a positive impact on their school, community and beyond. Throughout the program the instructor/teacher operates as the iLead21 coach rather than the deliver of content. The coach is on the sidelines supporting the students as they navigate the process.

How has it been spreading?

iLead21 has spread organically. When exposed to the program and concepts educators see the value added for their students. Basically the program has spread through word of mouth. One school or youth servicing organization talks to others and it grows from there. In fact, several organizations have used the program with adult learners and found it to be highly effective so it has spread not only from organization to organization buy across generations within organizations. Those who truly understand the skills children need in the changing globalized world.
